So I've got some money coming to me this Christmas and I'm trying to decide between a new FNX-45 and a surplus SKS. Anyone care to sway me in one direction or another?

I'm not sure I can sway you....but I can give you my choice.
If you're talking about the ''Russian" Surplus....while it's a 7.62x39mm cartridge which is not the same as the 7.62 / .308 = NATO round.....and I'm not sure how available the ammo might be or how much it would cost. If it's the one I'm thinking of its of a WWII vintage style with a 10 rd. fixed magazine. If so I don't know if it would be in the Assualt Rifle category that everyone goes ape shit. over. So you ability to purchase might not be restricted faster than a Handgun.
I would choose the FNx 45... I think it's a very good handgun with a lot of nice ''features''. Holsters have been somewhat restricted as to who makes one for it, but its improving. It has a 15 rnd mag which is the biggest I've seen. I like the hammer and the SA/DA versatility.
My personal pistols currently are all Springfield Armory. I have and XD 45 compact that has been super great for me. It has a 13+1 magazine capacity and recoil is surprising controlable. It's is slightly 'heavier' than other .45 models but I like that because it reduces recoil IMHO. I also have an XD Service Model 40 and a subcompact XD 40 too. If you don't intend to ''shoot'' alot......you may want to consider the 40 cal over the 45 as the recoil is even more manageable.
PLUS the XD's today I believe are considerably less expensive than the FNX 45 as I understand it.
All my XD's have been superb...no jams...no misfires, and fired all types of ammo from Winchester 'white' box target stuff (low end)....to Hornady FTX / FTP HP's (high end).
Hope this helps

There seems to be plenty of 7.62x39 around but I do most of my shooting at Open Range in Crestwood and they don't allow steel cased ammo so the .45 is probably the smartest choice. I'm not too worried about a ban either at this point, there is not enough political muscle on the left to get that accomplished. Glad you like your XD, my friend has an xdm9 and it seems smoother than my g19, but I'm very accurate with the glock so I don't foresee any changes.

Not an expert and the ''best'' can be a relative term. One of my trainers in the early days said ....' the best gun is the one you're most comfortable and most accurate with'. $$$ to me are not the best indicators of quality = best.....either Whatever you do....don't sell the 357.....in the early years I use to buy, then sell ...to upgrade to a new gun.....and now I wish I would have kept several of them as today they would be highly prized....i.e. Colt Python 6" (my biggest mistake when I jumped to autos) IF I WERE YOU ADVICE......go to You Tube and word search something like...."45 v 40 v 9" to see probably hundreds of videos by all sorts of people on which caliber to consider.....THEN search along the lines of "Glock v M&P" to see many more videos comparing along those lines or any two manufacturers you want to compare.
AS FOR ME.....if $$$ are no object....and in no particular order but I would put the following in the $$$ best = Sig, Kimber, FNX, HK near the top.......if you only want one gun that will be totally reliable and take max abuse and still perform you can never go wrong with GLOCK.... of course I own and am partial to Springfield Armory XD line......S&W's M&P line is getting rave reviews,
Beretta, Colt, Ruger, Taurus, Stoeger, and CZ all have solid reps
BUT IF YOU PINNED ME DOWN......and I was not already in love with my XD's (call me sentimental...or too old to change)...... I WOULD BUY A ....GLOCK Model 23 (4 in barrel = considered Compact.....40 caliber)
Hope this helps

You didn't ask but I'll give you my opinion anyway :) You said "for the money" so I'm assuming you don't want to spend more than you have to. Sure Sig, HK, & FNH make good autos (not a Kimber fan just from millions of internet review read) but Glock, XD, & the S&W M&P line all come in under $600. XD has had a few recalls lately, and Glock had a few problems with their gen 4 models early on. I think all 3 are GtG now, and you would do well to try a few in your hand. Some people don't like the way a Glock points, others say Glocks are too chunky. XD & M&P seem to have better ergonomics for a lot of people. All that being said I've got a Glock 19 and I shoot great with it. I actually like the grip & the gun and wouldn't trade it for anything. I will also second the advice on hanging on to the .357.

I don't have the $$$ financial resources to buy the guns I wish were in my gun safe....nor a wife who see the investment value.....in some ways guns are as secure as gold as an investment....good guns never lose value... but I went the XD route for a couple of reasons. The most important was that I went ''off the grid'' getting my 2 XD 40's. I don't like having only registered guns that could be confiscated I know there have been some recalls...but I thought they were only related to the ''single'' stack 45 that just came out....but mine are from the older XD (not saftey option then) models and they have been flawless in reliability. I just wish I could put better after market sights on them....but I'll need an armorer to do that as everything I see or read says it's supper hard to do on the older XD's if not all Xd's. Me with my XD's and you with your 19.....we have guns we like....and can shoot great with.....that's the only thing that really should matter....it's not a status thing (I have a "Sig")...it's a "best chance to survive thing"

I've got more friends who shoot now than ever before; a great side benefit of moving back to KY I guess. And I have nothing against the XDs, any manufacturer can have a recall and they seem to have done everything they can to fix it. My shooting buddy has a compact XDm in 9mm so I've shot it several times and I like it!

Thanks Tattman, no problem on the 357. My Dad gave it to me about 34 years ago.

Well I couldn't wait any longer (and the original quote that I got expired today) so I went ahead and got the FNX-45. It is an absolutely awesome firearm and I still can't get over how massive it is. 15 rounds of 45 makes for a beefy grip and a heavy gun. I'm sure I'll get a holster for it eventually but it would be a bear to carry on any type of a hike without a better belt than I currently own. I shot around 80 rounds at the range after I bought it and it was smooth, the single action trigger is really crisp. The double action is a chore though. I was able to put shots just about where I wanted them (within about 2" of aim) out to 50 feet and I'm sure I'll get better as I learn the gun. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a large .45 from an excellent brand, as long as you don't mind aggressive stippling and a large grip.
As an add on, Open Range in Crestwood gave me a great deal; this is the second gun I've purchased from them and both times no one in town has come close to touching their price. I highly recommend them if you live within a reasonable drive.

I have yet to have the opportunity to hold one.....so I'm anxious to see how ''big'' the grip is...... I don't have big hands but I'd say I'm maybe a little over average One reason I like the Xd's is that my double stack 40 and 45 are very comfortable.....but I remember an early Para-Ordnance double stack just felt too big in my hand / or my hand was too small.

The grip is definitely big. My hands certainly aren't "huge" but I've always worn "Large" sized gloves, so they're probably a bit over average. With the regular backstrap the grip was about perfect, I feel like it would have been a bit of a stretch if I'd used the larger backstrap. All of the controls were well placed and within reach of 1 handed operation. I had also "tried it on" in a store before purchasing so I was fairly certain the grip would work for me. After a couple weeks of looking I haven't found 1 local store that carries a holster for it. There really aren't a whole lot of online retailers that have a holster specifically for the fnx-45. I may end up having a buddy make me a custom holster.

Patrick I would suggest you google about the FNX-45. I seem to remember when I was surfing....running accross a site where holsters for the FNX were discussed. There weren't many but I know I saw a picture of one that was a SLS and it looked pretty good. I'll try to find it and if I do, I will come back and give you the link.

I have a Beretta 92fs in stainless finish... it's the most beautiful gun I've ever seen.
The gun is a little big for everyday carry, but there is just something iconic about the look of an M9/92fs.

I can respect those classic looks. I'm unlikely to get one just because I don't have infinite firearm leeway with the wife. Plus limited funds and space in my safe. My Glock 19 will do a boringly reliable job of putting 9mm where I want it out of a regular sized pistol, but it won't look as cool :) Guns with a stainless finish just look nice.
