I am definitely no firearm expert but can pass on some info. A few months back I was looking for a reliable handgun that had stopping power and could be handled by my wife without struggling. I grew up with guns so I know enough about them to get me in trouble but she has never been around any at all. I didn't want to invest an arm and a leg in a gun she couldn't use but getting something that was too small would also be a waste. She honestly believed that the bigger the gun in size, the more it was going to kick. Some friends have a wide variety of handguns and came over to the house to let her shoot them. She shot a 40, 38, 32 and 9 and started getting used to handling them. I handed her a .22 that was bigger than the others and she said she didn't want to shoot it because it would kick too much. She laughed after shooting it. I keep rifles and shotguns in the house but there is no way she is ever going to figure out how to use them in an emergency. We finally decided on a Smith & Wesson SD9VE. If you don't have $500 dollars or more to put out for a Glock or other similar handguns I have found this to meet all my needs. It is light enough for her but high enough caliber to stop whatever you hit. You can find it new for $300 and normally comes with 2 15/16 round mags. I've never had any problems with it and she likes to shoot it. It also comes in a .40 for those that prefer that over a 9mm.
