That team with Fitch, Daniels, and Hayes was one of the most enjoyable UK teams to watch, right up there with the Wall Cousins group

I agree with so much of what everyone has said here. I have always enjoyed reading anything and everything the you have posted Dave. Anytime you posted anything I always felt like I was reading something from a friend. When Marc would post it always felt like an arrogant prick talking down to everyone else. The man may have been very connected, and maybe he still he is, but he damn well knew it and acted like it. Never have liked people who think they are better than others for whatever the reason.

Great story, DK. Thank you for sharing it. I love this type of information, even if it's 10+ years after it happened.

Some of you know I took in several games of Wiggins. However, I've never seen Young in person. So, here's my take: First, Wiggins is a god, when and if it's his turn. I've seen his arms above the square to catch an oop. He is an incredible jack. Like I have maintained, he's Drexlerish. Second, Wiggins, unless coached differently, will take time off. It's like he has headphones on and gets lost. I know that type. Fitch was that way in high school, but his enemy, a kid named Clark Washinton, stopped him dead in his tracks. When Washington said Fitch was the best player he'd ever seen, I took notice and told Tubby that. As an aside, Gerald would have been in jail by now if it wasn't for a white man who took him off the streets and financed his way to Lexington for a visit. His brother was killed in an unfortunate shoot out, the hood that Gerald knew. His sister, Valencia, talked trash to him and was as much instrumental in getting to play ball as the white doctor. I love that episode of my life. I love the kid. Back to Wiggins, and the reasoning behind his choice of schools. It had to do with when Young committed earlier. Wait, in some ways Young had nothing to do with AW going elsewhere. If Young didn't commit, AW might have given UK a nod, but that's a guess on my part, yet educated. Antigua knew that and tried his hardest to get him turned. Wiggins was, as always, unreachable, by phone, coach, parents, untouchable. No one knew, not even Kansas, UK, UNC, FSU. No one knew. Ask OA, his recruiter. There was another stick in the fire: I talked with Wayne Selden at a game and he seemed, in retrospect, to know the outcome of Wiggin's choice. I think Selden was maybe the only person who knew while we were all guessing. Third, Wiggins is the better of the two, JMOI. So I'd give AW a 9.6 on a one to ten. (I've only given one ten in fifteen years, that to Amare Stoudamire). I'd give the same score to Young only because he doesn't take time off. More than that, he can shoot when on. Listen, he will not always be on. And that's a good thing, for when they don't drop, he finds another way to either score or help someone else to score, something Wiggins is still listening to headphones. Fourth, Young will be a glue, Wiggins will be a non personae in the locker. So, bottom line, KU got the good one, UK got the even steven in my book. Thanks Dave. I saw AW play 5 or 6 times, in person, and he is a tremendous talent. He does seem to take off plays and he gets into ruts where he wants to fire up jumpers, when he could take his man to the basket any time he wished. I wanted him badly at UK, but with this team bonding as it is, I think that Young might be the best fit for this team.

Good stuff.I will always remember Fitch ripping rebounds out of the hands of the bigs when they would bring it down to their waist. Eric Daniels and Chuck were some of my favorites back then also. Young, I think will be a solid guy on both sides of the ball. Wiggins cares about what his play looked like more than about the team. I am happy with what we have and look forward to watching the season unfold.
Like this much more than TBK. Was very tired of the way that board was run. I have been a member over there for a while but have not posted in over a year.

Thanks Dave. You guys have nailed. This is the kind of stuff that made TBK awesome. I can't wait to see Young and Randle on the floor together. Especially if Aaron Harrison truly becomes an elite PG. Which I think he already is. But I mean in the sense that he worries about getting the ball to his teammates first. Its gonna be lethal.

A couple of comments: 1. DK, thanks for recapping the Fitch story for us. I've heard the longer version of it from you before, but since he's one of my favorite players (from one of my favorite UK teams) I never tire of it. Or of your stories. Have a Shasta! 2. Here's my take on Wiggins. (Totally ignorant opinion, btw. Just to warn all of you.) At his best, he'll play great and help his KU team to the championship game this season...where they'll lose to UK, of course. At his worst, he'll end up with a Shabazz-type year, and will still probably go Top 3, or at least somewhere in the lottery. Since he's never done me any personal harm, I'll wish him the best. But I won't work particularly hard to keep up with how he's doing (beyond the standard coverage His Hypeness will get), because he chose the wrong dang team. His loss, not ours. Anyway, glad to be here for the conversation, and glad to see DK posting. Appreciated your thread about the things you *didn't* say at TBK, and have to admit that I was aware of the fact that you'd been posting there far less as well. I don't need to know the story behind that at all (if there even is one), but I'm grateful to read your stuff again. I met you in person once in a liquor store in Geist (of all places), and you seemed like a right nice fella. Glad we all have a shiny, new place to congregate and talk shop.
