Other than a brief stretch in the 1st half UNCG had Kentucky playing catch-up for the 1st thirty minutes. As usual, another insane shooting performance by one of the opposition had the home team scratching their collective heads on what to do. Couple that with what surely looked like a long stint on the bench by Keldon Johnson and it didn't look all that rosy.
I'm not sure how much credit to give to Hagans or just chalk it up to the Energiser Bunny running out of juice late but UK pulled away for a deceptive 17-point win very late in the contest.
I truly expected Johnson not to play after rolling that ankle and was surprised by his reappearance and his effectiveness in the 2nd half.
I have to agree (reluctantly) w/ Seth Greenburg when he said this UK squad lacked identity. They do play like a collection of individuals at this juncture.....
That was the best opponent UK has seen since Duke and I thought they played better than they have against some of the lesser lights we've seen the last couple weeks. Need more from PJ; need more shots to fall for Herro; need better play at the PG.
Louavull got by Seton Hall on Saturday; let's see if we can do the same......

agree on the insane shooting, but they let the guy get started with a layup that Washington just stood & watched. Cal & his over paid assistants have no idea how to stop the high pick & roll or high screen. How many times over the years has the opponent gotten a wide open shot at the top of the circle. UK always goes under the screen instead of hedging out like most other teams. That added to the fact that no one can guard their man off the dribble. Guards & forwards beat UK's players every game & this happens against much inferior opponents.
I will give Cal some credit by changing his offense in the 2nd half. It did get a few more open drives. IF UK is to do anything this year, they have to have something out of Washington & the point guard. Herro, Johnson & Travis play hard & fairly consistent. Montgomery has some talent, but he is soft. When he sets a screen, he never even touches the defender....pretty sad that these guys have no fundamentals

Effort and disruption stops 3's. Its that simple and our team does neither. Simply get up into the shooters shit, put your hands up in the air not down at your ankles and move. Instead we are 6 feet off the shooter, lazy with out hands down and then they pull from deep and we are lunging forward with a lazy block attempt that isnt effective at all.
I dont see any chance in hell that we beat any of the better competition if things dont change. We can barely beat terrible mid major teams. We are ranked way too high right now, as I would say we are fringe top 25. The teams ahead of us are way better and play real defense.

This is, as in years past, an "effort" issue, plain & simple. There is no grand strategy whereby you can obviate hard, sustained effort. Covering the arc, cutting off passing lanes, pushing offenses further out on the floor, getting around screens, forcing opponents to take low percentage shots, boxing out--these are are effort items. One would think the loss to Duke would be sufficient to get that point across, but these kids are only now waking up to reality. At least I hope they are.

PJ is looking more and more like a bust...he is putting no effort in, not on offense or defense...with his experience and size he should be owning opponents, instead he looks disinterested in being on the court....Herro is just tryign too hard... maybe feeling a little bit of pressure to be the "guy" shooting and putting up too many bad shots....the rest is just a gel issue.. they are starting to get more comfortable with each other,..the stretch of one game a week will help

However, I think his effort level IS something he's not yet used to, and so it IS affecting his shooting until he gets accustomed to it.

Still plenty of time to get dialed back in for a post season run.

The NBA told him he wasnt good enough last year. This season is essentially his NBA try out and future we are talking about here. He is big and strong and athletic enough to absolutely dominate. Instead he wants to float around and shoot three's. He should be parked on the block, have the ball thrown in and dominate down there getting easy buckets and fouls.

Well, that makes 3 of us, but its pretty much what we saw last year, with him taking plays off at both ends of the floor.
