It isn't hard to find an article expounding upon the "possibility" of this years squad being so-deep and so-talented that the idea of resurrecting the "Platoon" system of yore is in play. These comments are always paired with the obligatory comparisons between this year's team and the 38-1 team. I can see the potential to Platoon certain groups, ie, E.J with Travis and P.J. with Richards; same w/ guards; Herro with Quickley and Hagans with Green. However, no such opportunity for the 5-by-5 swap. Not gunna happen.

As of now I think the minutes are pretty easy to slice up
PG, 2G, SF Green, Quickley, Hagans, Herro, Johnson
Bigs EJ, PJ, Richards, Travis
I'm purposely not including Baker because I haven't seen him and after seeing the other guys he is going to have to be really really good to get minutes.
120 minutes for 5 players at the 1,2,3. Keldon probably leads this group in minutes since he is the only true 3.
80 minutes for 4 bigs. Minutes could get a little tight here but with standard UK whistle and big man foul trouble - I think everyone will play a good amount. Barring injury I would think PJ averages the most out of this group. Pencil him in for 28-30 and the other guys will fight for the rest based on how they are playing and matchups.

I agree. There will be line up variations depending on who's doing well and match ups with opponents but no platooning. Cal will probably go deep on the bench but he won't platoon

0% chance of a platoon. I have no idea why the topic keeps coming up.

The only time it has ever been done was an overwhelming success until injuries caused us to piece it together with less than 10 good players. Had Poythress not gotten injured I believe we would have been undefeated. I have seen more people complain about it but no one has had a legitimate reason for saying it didn't work. Calipari doesn't like it because he believes it may hurt recruiting. If Calipari thought he could continue to have 10 good players a year he would platoon a lot more often. Why wouldn't you want the possibility of platooning, it means you have 10 really good players?

Obviously, if everyone among the first 10 players winds up playing 20 min./gm, there's no distinction between mass substitution at 10 minute intervals and staggering them in some other way. Cal went to platooning because he had 10 guys who DESERVED playing time, and mass substitution was a much, much easier way to keep track. He later found it necessary to repudiate the practice, simply because other coaches were spinning it negatively on the recruiting trail. Regardless, the distinction between staggered vs mass substitutions is mere form over substance UNLESS a significant variance in PT is ALSO involved, as well.
At this point, after watching the games in the Bahamas, I have no idea just how much the variance in PT will be, especially since Cal has historically tended toward using PT not just as a reflection of comparative value, but as a means of DEVELOPING kids in need of it AND which he thinks can be a contributor come tourney time. It's just what he does.
