I think this Michigan State game is going to be just what the doctor ordered for this team. I certainly want us to win, but am wondering if that is the best thing to happen relative to the development of this young juggernaut of a team! A game like this will give them an idea of how to "hit on all cylinders" to win a game, and give them an idea of how they have to play TOGETHER to optimize their efforts and win against a big time team. However it goes, it is going to be a great game to watch.........an early season classic!!!

if we could get this sort of effort from poy every game, hustle, rebounds, and rebounding with some authority in some cases, and he seemed to just let it all go and play with some toughness, then i will be thrilled. and it adds another dimension to the team. what else can you say about randle that hasn't been said. first team all american. really good first game. liked how they kept their foot on the pedal in the second half. once they got the lead back to double digits, they just kept pushing and increasing it. you could see the wind was just taken from their sails as we just put the game away.

I agree that Randle and Poy did great on the boards and playing hard. Glad to see Andrew out there. He helps the flow of the game a lot. Will only get better. I was impressed with the way Aaron played on D. In the first exhibition game he didn't really have a great defensive game, but last night he was playing hard and getting his hands on a lot of balls.

Like all of Cal's teams, this one will learn to play good defense. I imagine most of these guys, while in high school, would maybe block a shot or two but bent knees, moving with their feet wasn't something they were concerned with. Typical freshmen, all with a learning curve.

Actually, this is kind of what I was talking about the other day when I said that Cal is going to coach up both Young & Poythress to play to their strengths while making an absolute killing as folks try to contain Willie & Julius. After this last game, tho, I won'yt be surprised if folks decide to be more conscious of Alex; convinced Willie can't score; and get ripped by WCS as a result. I still believe that as fabulous as Randle is, he's going to becomne even more lethal when he learns to look for the easy dump off play down low. I counted 4 plays when he was wheeling & dealing in the lane when he missed a wide open teammate at point blank range down under. I don't think he's at all selfish; I think he's just become accustomed to being responsible for scoring once he's w/in 12 ft of the rack. Once people realize he's quite willing/capable of just dropping the ball over their heads for an uncontested dunk or lay in when they come up to help, he's going to become even more unmanageable.

Ya Randle missed open guys several times. I think he ended up scoring on most of those plays, but he could have made an easy pass for an easier play IMO. I agree that he is used to having to carry the load and will have to adjust, as will everyone else, to having so much talent around them. I wouldn't wanna change much about him tho. That's for sure. He's a beast!

Threads such as this one are what keeps me coming to only this board now (almost cured of my TBK addiction.....still a lifer so I do check on rare occasions). By the time I reach the bottom of the thread.....the conversation has been so good there's not much more that can be said. It's going to be like '12 this season.....watching Cal tune the Ferrari and then watch the rest of the potential contenders grow smaller and smaller in the rear view mirror as UK dominates to # 9.....Dream the Dream
