my jeep patriot is making a grinding noise when turning the steering wheel. It seems to be the worst when the car is first being started and then dissipates when the engine is warm. Could that be a bad CV joint, or bad pump that restricts the fluid flow, or something else in the steering, like a control arm needing lubricated. The big question: Is it dangerous to drive? Been doing it around a month now.

I'm not a professional, but it sounds like low power steering fluid. I'd check that first.

took it in today. Verdict: needs new rack and pinion steering assembly. 880 bucks. Christmas list on suicide watch.

1st, what year is the patriot? Did you buy it new or used? In certain cases the manufacture will fix it for free. Do you trust the guy to fix it right for 800 dollars? The best way to see if it is a CV joint is to start the Jeep and turn the wheel all the way to the left and let it idle forward, if it snaps you have a bad cv joint then go to the right and repeat. It could be just a pulley.
