Well, look at the following:
In the '96 season, a team record 480 steals for the whole year: record 35 - 5.
In the '95 season, second best total of 435 steals: record 34 - 2.
In the '12 season, last year, 185 steals, lowest since the '84 season, which record was 18 - 13.
To me, steals are indicative of the type of athletes on the floor. They're quick and long and good at it. Steals are vitally important to overall success.
I bring this up because I think this year's team, with quickness, length, and prowess, will achieve well over 400 steals.
If they don't, will relinquish my hold on a case of Shastas.
By the way, our last championship of 2011, that team had only 242 steals, but crushed the team record of blocked shots. They had 344 blocks, in second place is 234 blocks. Thing is, some of those blocked shots landed in our hands, but they are not counted as a steal.

Steals are a big part of the game.. With a steal you get another offensive possession.. Which usually is another shot.. You maybe onto something Dave!

Well, the 480 steal season for instance let's say leads to 450 possessions, discounted for turnovers. If a team averages 50% shooting on two point shots, that's a season total of 450 points, which is 20 percent of last years team's total points for the year.

Cal always says we have people to block it!! So if there man beats them off the dribble theres always somebody there to block it! I think that was the reason there were so many blocked shots that year and the steals were down.... Either way its gonna be fun!!

Last year Poythress had NINE steals for the ENTIRE year, which was 33 games for him. NINE, that's awful. I expect Young to have nine steals in two games. I think you have to consider that for playing time, don't you?

Yep! Cant believe Poythress only had nine steals for the entire year.... that says it all.... I think your right Young will have that many accidentally... and not forgetting about the twins! You have done your homework! Thanks Dave!

A steal is a turnover without a stopped clock that most always leads to a fast break, and ultimately two easy points.
I'd say very, very important.

Steals are often 4 pt swings. No scoring chance for them and 2 easy pts for us. Plus the burst of energy our guys get with dunk after dunk!!!!

To paraphrase Proverbs 27:17-- "Steal sharpens steal, So one man sharpens another." I don't really know how that relates. Nerlens more than made up for Alex's low steal totals. 50. 50! Along with 105 blocks. In an incomplete season. I wish NN were part of this year's team so he could achieve the level of success his talent and heart deserved....

Young may have more than 9 steals tomorrow night lol. He is very long and anticipates the pass well. This team could be scary good defensively.

JY is going to be a nightmare for opposing teams. The pressure he applies has got to have an accumulative effect over the duration of a game. He's like a one-man pressing defense!!!!

Number of steals show how active you are on defense. I don't see a Cal team coming very close to Pitino's best team ever in terms of steals just because of the difference in styles of D. But blocked shots + Steals. We can definitely get way up there this year.

I agree that Cal's defensive mindset doesn't stress steals like P-head's team did....BUT with the big boys we'll have guarding the basket....I can definitely see Young being the leader of our team in steals. James, Andrew, and Aaron could really take some chances in pressure defense / steals knowing the big boys had their backs.

I think you have to consider that for playing time, don't you? Definitely. The deep bench is going to be a very motivating factor for Poythress. We'll have to see how he handles it. But to your point, I always have said the same thing, blocks are fine but you don't recover possession of all of them... steals are far better. Gotta love our length this year leading to many a run-out.
