What's wrong with Kentucky basketball?
Calipari and the KSR (Kentucky Sports Radio) mindset that has hijacked this program for the past five years.
When Cal arrived on campus five years ago, he did so at the program's most vulnerable moment- and Cal took advantage. One of the first things he did was form an alliance with KSR - the hip online media presence that - to their credit - has amassed an enormous following of Cat fans across the Bluegrass and beyond.
However, Cal has used KSR as his own propaganda-spewing machine and KSR has followed his every command like a faithful little puppy waiting for a treat. Cal will toss Matt and company a treat every now and then with some exclusive interviews, some inside scoop or recruiting tip - just to keep KSR relevant and push the notion that KSR has bypassed traditional media when it comes to covering Kentucky Basketball.
Kentucky fans are passionate to a fault. They love their team and they crave any information they can get. KSR fed that appetite and soon had UK fans addicted and Cal thus had the ultimate spin tool. Despite his shady past, Cal came to Lexington amid a lot of buzz on KSR - who quickly told fans disheartened following the Billy Gillispie debacle, that Cal would have the Cats back on top in months - not years. KSR told them to ignore the 'haters' who brought up Cal's NCAA compliance issues and the rumors about notorious connections to people like World Wide Wes. Instead - accept Calipari and enjoy the ride.
KSR then sucked the UK fan into ignoring basketball by embracing celebrity. First came the John Wall dance craze, then the Jorts, the Anthony Davis unibrow, the Nerlens flattop, etc. More has been written on KSR about the personality and branding of these future NBA stars than about X's and O's that once dominated barbershop conversations across the Commonwealth. No longer was UK about what happened on the hardwood - it was about being the cool kid on the block.
Cal brought in rappers and awarded outsiders like Drake, Jay-Z, LeBron James and others in order to make Kentucky the hip program of the day. Of course - trends and fads are fleeting - and Drake and LeBron haven't been around UK for a couple of years. But Cal continued to talk about things other than basketball and other than winning.
His popularity and KSR's TMZ-like approach to covering the Wildcats set the stage for Cal to say and do anything with immunity. When he made the outlandish statement that NBA draft night was the most important moment in UK basketball - old-timers could be heard coughing and Rupp was probably rolling over in his grave - but he got a pass. Matt Jones and KSR spun the comment as being for recruits. When Calipari made repeated claims that UK was a Players First program - traditionalists who were always taught to put team first - were taken aback, but the spin confused them into acceptance.
Cal had a fun three first years. Two Final Fours and an NCAA title kept critics at bay. (I expressed my concern. However, Jones apparently recognized my IP and had me blocked from commenting on his site). I should note now that KSR is not necessarily a family-friendly site. Often there are risqué photos posted and commenters are allowed to post the most vile, offensive and sexist material in response. I've never used one word of profanity nor I have ever been crude or obscene. KSR is also noted for it's racially-charged posts at times - often making derogatory comments about ball players of certain ethnic groups. I called them out on this once - and my comments were deleted.
But now - in year five of the Cal experiment - things have gone awry. It's obvious to most UK fans that Cal does not build a program - he merely assembles a new basketball team every eight months. That is not a recipe for success. KSR continues to support Cal in nearly all he says and done. After all, they hitched their wagon to Cal early on and they rely on him.
What's wrong with UK basketball? Calipari and the KSR mindset is what's wrong. I'm sensing more and more UK fans are finally waking up. My only question - what took you so long?
And Matt - I will say I admire you for following a passion (UK basketball) and becoming very successful in your endeavor. You've got a good thing that can be salvaged if only you would put the UK fan first - and not Calipari. You and your site need to distance yourself from Calipari - otherwise, when he goes down - he might take you with it.

FAAAAAARRRRR CAL!!!!
Come on, dude. Cal is what is wrong with Kentucky? Step away from the computer, think about where the program was headed, and then consider where we are now. Two FF and a championship in five years, and this season isn't over. This team could go on a run like Knight's bunch did, and if they do, you just go ahead and skip the celebration.

I don't agree with the OPs take on Calipari but I will say that KSR has become what the Louisville media has become in regards to how they kiss the athletic departments ass. even listening this morning all they wanted to do was blame the fan base for UK having a less then great season leaving very little blame to coach or players.

I'm and old fart and while I check out KSR...I get the feeling that many of their posters are part of a generation that I can't grasp and often can't stand. Like I said I come from a different world....and old world long gone....and I'm not saying its better.
Matt must be a smart dude. He has molded a career that I didn't think he could create. For the talking heads of the 'big' shows etc. he's becoming the voice of UK stuff they turn to for their sound bites. Good for him.
I'm still recovering from the knowledge that Matt's description of ''frosted tips one'' ......turned out to be truer apparently that the ''frosted one's'' description of Matt. Weird how that worked out.

This is just silly. We're recruiting well and in the Elite 8 [again]--but things have supposedly "gone awry"? The UK fan base has been "sucked into ignoring basketball"? Really? Are you nuts or something?

Belem be careul on your comments, your on the border where your post will disappear. Oh please don't delete posts like this. Especially in this sort of "all topics" area. It is much more fun to watch everyone point and laugh :) Once someone makes a post like this it IS tough for anyone else to take them seriously however...

This is a dumb post (probably get legendary status at rupp rafters). Cal has a better record than Rupp did, and 50% of the time we are going to the final four. He has top 100 ranked players listing our school as offered to get other colleges interested when Cal has never watched them play.
Your right Cal has made UK a icon of what is cool with the young Kids. Unfortunately the kids are different than they were when I was young. If you want the best and want to win legally this is best way to do it.
Cal has been here enough years now that you need to deal with it.
