Anyone have a sense as how this young man stacks up beside PJ & Reid? To me, and based purely on game clips I've seen online, Sestina looks kind of like a hybrid of the two. That is, he has Reid's 245#, but [assuming his claimed height is accurate] over a somewhat longer, 6'9 frame [and still representing mostly muscle and plenty of strength, nonetheless]. At the same time it appears that his stroke from outside is solid , tho maybe not quite as good as the 42% accuracy PJ achieved this season; Sestina took well over a hundred 3's this year and made 38%. On the other hand, he seems a better foul shooter than either at 80%. I doubt he's more athletic than PJ, but possibly a bit more nimble and polished with the ball than Reid. Right now, and remembering what Reid [and PJ] did for us this year, I'm thinking this guy might fit our needs better than a recent HS grad weighing a good deal less and having problems either gaining or retaining position in the lane. JMO
Thoughts?

Not a starter so he stacks up behind PJ and Reid. He would be a depth player at best.

If he is starting then I would assume several things to be true. Either EJ, Nick or both will leave. Also....we arent getting McDaniels or Hurt. Which leads me to the fact that Our front court will be a major major issue next year.

I don't think we get Hurt or McDaniels, either. On the other hand, I'd expect Nick & EJ to decide whether to go/stay a good bit before lineups are decided.
In the end, tho, I don't know whether Sestina will start or not, but I do think Cal expects him to play significant minutes. Otherwise, why bring him here?

E.J. stays; he'll get first crack at minutes at either the 4 or 5. I just don't know what to say about Nick; he just isn't fitting in to what the staff wants. It certainly appears that there's a mismatch of his skills/aptitude vs what Cal wants his Centers to do. Nick has a difficult choice at this juncture.... Jaamal Magloire would be the perfect fit as a UK Center in the Calipari era. A big, bruising, mean SOB that was happy patrolling the paint and cleaning up the garbage.

I think they took Sestina for depth because that is going to be a major issue for us next year. He may start. We need an offensive post presence. I dont know if thats him or not but if we dont have one we have absolutely no chance next year. You have to have someone that can post up and get you buckets reliably 10 foot in and I dont see a single player on the roster that can do that.

hopefully, this has nothing to do with McDaniels or Hurt, although I don't expect Hurt to pick UK
The only place EJ or Richards could go is transfer.......they have a long way to go

Both are quiet though. I didn't get a chance to watch Keion Brooks, but there was a buzz about him yesterday after his game. I think him and Sestina will be solid to go along with a hopefully much improved EJ/Richards combo. 4 big men is nice but still concerns me.. 1 injury away from being thin. Back to Sestina though. Of course his highlights look decent :-) I haven't seen him miss a shot yet. But looking at his career stats was interesting. He shot over 50% every season. I like that. I know the D will be more intense by playing better opponents but it's a good sign that he has touch and a clue how to play. He doesn't look like a vertical athlete but he moves pretty well. Of course he will struggle in space versus Guards but he doesn't look slow or awkward at all. I am interested what his 3/4 court sprint time will be at UK's pro day ( along with his length measurements). I think Cal will probably have him lean out a bit and have the trainers work with his explosiveness (similar to Reid Travis). And like Travis, he will add some bulk to our lineup. Next year's team should be pretty versatile defensively. Also, looking at his stats - he has developed into a shooter. He didn't come out of high school as a pure shooter ( at least stat wise. ) espn stats link I checked his game by game log and he looks pretty streaky from 3. A big part of 3s is confidence and comfort. Looks like he has shot enough of them now to be confident from behind the arc. One big positive is that he only had 2 below average games shooting free throws.

Sometimes, being surrounded by better players causes shrinkage in one's production; other times, it frees a player up to greater production, or to score/contribute in other ways. I'm really interested in seeing how we wind up using this guy.

brooks looked good in the HS semifinal vs Oak Hill. He's not a skinny guy. He's going to be hard to push around. Glad we got him!
