What factor(s) is creating this team's yoyo effect in its play? I mean, Willis is the only non-5 star starter. The first subs off of the bench are usually Lee or Skal, two more 5-star rated players. You have some experience with Poy as a senior; Lee and Hawkins as Juniors.
What are the reasons? Immaturity, Youth, Coachability, Lack of Experience, Attitude, Inner Strife, Selfishness, Loss of Slice as Asst. Coach, Cal is not the best X's and O's bench coach, Cal's ranting and raving at them during the game, Jealousy for having Skal spend the night, 5-star system of rating high school players is overrated, team doesn't stay in the Holiday Inn when traveling, International mix of players, etc.
Know that this list includes far-fetched causes but what is the opinion of others for the yoyo effect?

Mentality.
If Skal, Alex, and Lee had Ulis's mindset or even close to it, we'd be #1. They have mental lapses for entire games and they disappear.

so true, if everyone played as hard as Ulis, they would be dynamite & probably be the favorite to win the NCAA, but as it is they are satisfied to play 1 decent game & then stink up the joint the next
